This is the thumb on the inside of the vessel, feeling the wall thin before it tears. It’s the quiet background process that prunes old backups not based on a calendar, but on the graceful, predictable slope of storage consumption.
This approach requires a more intimate familiarity with your systems. The potter knows her clay; its composition, how wet it is, how it behaves on a Tuesday versus a Thursday. We must know the rhythms of our services—their baseline hum, their weekly peaks, their quiet hours. The goal is not to prevent all failure, which is impossible, but to feel the strain building within the system and apply counter-pressure long before the shape is lost. It is the art of sensing the inevitable and guiding it, gently, away from collapse.
