This role became starkly clear one afternoon during a summer thunderstorm. The lights flickered violently, and a moment later, my desktop monitor went black. My heart sank—I had unsaved work open. It is the switchboard operator of a bygone era, patiently rerouting connections and maintaining the line’s clarity against a backdrop of chaos. It absorbs the daily static—both literal and metaphorical—allowing the important signals to get through cleanly. And in doing so, this small, quiet object teaches a quiet lesson: that the most critical systems are often the ones that work hardest to remain unseen, ensuring that when we do look up from our work, everything is still, and always, humming along.
