Are our logs configured to hear the 'sigh' of an API endpoint that still returns a 200 status code but does so with a latency that slowly tries the patience of our most important partners? The miller’s failure wasn’t a technical one; it was a failure of perspective. He was solving for reliability, but the world was asking for relevance.

The lesson from that dusty ledger is not to abandon the careful logging of our systems. The miller’s vigilance kept his operation running smoothly for years. The lesson is to expand our definition of what ‘the system’ truly is. It is not just the servers and the databases; it is the entire ecosystem of users, partners, and competitors that gives our technology its purpose. We must listen not only for the grind of the millstone but also for the silence of the empty yard. Otherwise, we risk perfecting a machine that no one needs anymore, left with nothing to do but log its own impeccable, pointless operation.
