This, we are told, is the ideal.
I want to propose a heresy. What if this pursuit of pristine perfection is not just a Sisyphean task, but a potentially dangerous one? What if a certain kind of known, understood, and contained bug is not a problem to be solved, but a feature to be appreciated? I am not advocating for sloppiness. I am arguing for the strategic appreciation of the “welcoming flaw”—the familiar error that teaches you more about your system’s true nature than a thousand hours of silent, green-light uptime ever could.

This is the ultimate counterintuitive truth: striving for absolute, error-free operation can make a system more fragile. It creates a state where the first sign of trouble is also the moment of catastrophic failure. There is no early warning system, no gradient of degradation, only the binary switch from perfect to broken. By contrast, a system that accommodates a few welcoming flaws is inherently more resilient. It has already demonstrated its ability to function in a slightly imperfect state. The operators are familiar with its quirks and are not thrown into a panic by the first sign of irregularity. They have a relationship with the system, not just a set of alerts from it.
So, the next time you see that old, quirky error pop up in your logs, don’t just see a task to be closed. Consider its story. Ask what it tells you about the ecosystem you maintain. Perhaps it’s not a flaw to be fixed, but a feature to be understood—a welcoming flaw that quietly assures you the familiar machinery of your world is still turning, exactly as it always has.
