There is a server in the corner of my office, nestled in a small rack. We talk about uptime in numbers—days, months, years. We celebrate the milestones, but we rarely consider the physical evidence of that duration. In our digital dashboards, we see green checkmarks and flatlined resource graphs. We are lulled into a false sense of static perfection. But the physical world is never static. We build systems to be invisible, to run silently in the background so we can focus on the work that happens in the foreground. But there is a quiet wisdom in these physical artifacts.
